Objectives

The course provides an overview of the great thinkers of Western metaphysics from antiquity to the present. These thinkers are covered: Bacon, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Malebranche, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Freud, Lacan, Levinas, Derrida, Žižek. You will learn about the key concepts of metaphysics, such as substance, God, reason, consciousness, transcendence and immanence, ontology, phenomenon, etc.

Contents

Metaphysics deals with questions since Greek antiquity that go beyond sensory perception, such as: What is the meaning of life? Is there a God? What is death? Why is there something rather than nothing? What is Being? And Nothingness? Can we know what is right? Is there a soul? What exactly is consciousness? Or should we just stop asking these questions? But that\'s a metafyisch position, too. In Western history, there were always suggested answers to these questions and they always were again refuted or criticized by other thinkers. This course is the first guide in the maze of philosophical debates, traditions, terms and great names of Western metaphysics.
