At the end of this course the student is able to:

  1. Describe the biomedical aspects (for instance, general physiological principles regarding etiology, diagnostics, medical treatment and show how these aspects fit the different illnessess in, for instance cardiology, oncology, and diabetes;
  2. Denominate and explain which factors play a role in the development of a disease or the development of psychological problems and which factors are involved in the preservation of these issues;
  3. Describe the areas of interest (e.g., anxiety and depression), apply diagnostics (e.g., clinical interview versus questionnaires versus symptom diary) and explain which psychological interventions (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback) are used when treating patients from a biopsychosocial perspective in which diverse theoretical models (from clinical (health) psychology) are taken into account (for example, cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback).


Psychological aspects will be discussed as part of various diseases, e.g., reasons for referral to a psychologist, diagnostics (e.g., clinical interview, self-report), risk factors for adaptational problems, coping, compliance, life style changes, anxiety, depression, interventions (e.g., cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback). In addition, the effect of disease on caregivers (partners) will be discussed. At the same time general physiological principles of various organs, etiology, diagnostics, and treatment are topics of discussion, for example cardiac disease, COPD and other respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus and other endocrine disorders, HIV, Parkinson's disease and cancer. 


Practical lectures: Attendence is compulsory. 

Note: Students can only pass for this course when they pass the written examination and when they attended the practical lectures.
