Objectives

This course targets second-year Research Master and PhD students in business and economics with an interest in structural econometrics and computational economics, and their applications to empirical industrial organization and marketing. It aims at familiarizing them with current research in empirical industrial organization, and preparing them to do their own research in the field.


Contents

Recent developments in computational and econometric methods on the one hand and data availability on the other hand have boosted the literature on the structural empirical analysis of market structure and strategic interactions in markets. This course reviews a selection of these developments by providing in-depth discussions of key papers in the empirical industrial organization literature. State-of-the-art econometric and computational methods will be illustrated with structural empirical applications. The course will be taught in two parts :
  • Part I [230319: Empirical Industrial organization 1 (CentER); 3 ECTS] covers discrete choice and static demand estimation, consumer search, and static models of entry and market structure. It also provides a hands-on introduction to computing with MATLAB, with applications to the estimation of static demand systems.
  • Part II [230323: Empirical Industrial Organization 2 (CentER); 3 ECTS] covers dynamic discrete choice and dynamic demand, dynamic models of entry and market structure, and the econometrics of games. It continues the hands-on MATLAB training of Part I, with applications to the computation and econometrics of dynamic discrete choices and games.
Students are expected to actively prepare for and participate in all the lectures and the MATLAB sessions, and to work on regular computational and empirical assignments.

Required Prerequisites

CentER Research Master's first year microeconomics and econometrics sequences, or equivalent. Students can only participate in Part II after successfully completing Part I. Students who believe they should be exempted from this rule should contact the course coordinators before the start of Part I.
