Type of exams Written (70%) and several team assignments (30%) Participation in the tutorials including all assignments is mandatory.The grades for the assignments in these tutorials will remain valid until the end of the Academic Year during which students have participated in the (group)assignments. Students who did not finish the course successfully in the Academic Year in which they participated in this course, are considered to be repeaters. Repeaters can only participate in the regular examination and the resit in the next Academic Year. The grades then will count for 100%. (Examination schedule)

Objectives

Knowledge: Provide the student with the key scientific insights in the field of operations management.
Skills: The student will be introduced into the practical application of these scientific insights by writing and presenting papers, as well as reviewing other student's papers.


Contents

Managing the resources and processes with which a firm produces its output is the core task of operations managers. The term operations management refers to the activities, decisions and responsibilities of these managers. Put differently, in operations management the focus is on the management of the production process. The course starts with a number of issues, perspectives and concepts for the design of operational processes for the production of both products and services. Examples are product design and lay-out of factories and warehouses. Subsequently, we focus on planning and control of operations, e.g. capacity management, inventory management, ERP, and JIT. Last, we address quality and improvement management.

Research-based learning
In the tutorials, the student studies the relevant insights more deeply and is actively involved in class. The participants prepare for the tutorial by making a group assignment. In this assignment, the student applies the knowledge from the domain of operations management to a practical situation. This also requires the collection of empirical data and the analysis of alternatives. Each group has to present the results of their group assignment at least once. After the presentation, there will be discussion on the basis of questions provided by of the other groups. Furthermore, groups write a review on each other's paper presentation.
