Objectives

The goal of this course is to introduce the students the insights and the skills necessary to understand and evaluate firms' financial management decisions.

Contents

The first half of the class will deepen the valuation tools that the students have acquired in their previous finance classes. The emphasis will be to take standard valuation techniques, which the students have so far only seen in highly stylized examples, and apply them to more realistic settings. The second half of the class will discuss a number of deeper issues related to the theory and practice of corporate finance: capital structure, payout policy, manager-shareholder and shareholder-debt holder conflicts, investment policy, and cash management. Again, the emphasis will be on a 'hands-on' approach, where the students should expect to learn to apply their knowledge to solving tangible problems, rather than memorizing lists of concepts.
