Objectives

This course deals with the topic of privacy (or the lack thereof) as a result of innovation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Digital communication has become nearly ubiquitous in modern industrialized societies. Along with this comes the possibility of communication being digitally analyzed, which poses new challenges to privacy. This has re-vitalized not only research but also public debate about privacy.

The main objective of the course is to introduce students to various aspects of privacy in a data-driven society and economic models that allow the analysis of the respective issues. After the course students should be able to:

  • Formulate differentiated notions of privacy and explain which are at risk in light of technological developments
  • Identify key privacy trade-offs and incentives of consumers/users, firms, and governments
  • Apply relevant economic models to privacy and data-protection issues
  • Discuss potential remedies for privacy problems in light of model limitations
