Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Specific aims:

1. Students will further develop their knowledge and understanding of basic concepts such as culture, identity, ethnicity, religious diversity and multilingualism.

2. Students will learn the different disciplinary approaches, uses and interpretations connected with these concepts, including socio-psychological, anthropological, sociological, religion studies and sociolinguistic approaches.

3. Students will learn to apply these concepts in a critical and problematizing way to a particular case.

4. Students will learn to develop basic management or policy recommendations based on their own conclusion of their case analysis.

Additional skills: text analysis, critical thinking, presentation, writing.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Subjects that will be discussed include: Negotiating" identity as the consequence of interactive processes; Transnationalism; Cultural fragmentation, Identity constructions, Relevance of religious, ethnic and linguistic identity for the self, Differences and similarities between religious, ethnic and language groups with regard to identity, Changes in religious, ethnic and language identity after immigration, The self as consisting of multiple identities, Identity and ethnicity. These subjects will be discussed using various disciplinary perspectives.

Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The course has two requirements: (1) Students need to provide input to group discussions by way of critical presentations of additional texts on the subjects discussed in the meetings;
(2) Students prepare a presentation in pairs, submit a paper and review papers of other students.
Final grade: grade for the paper that students will write as a pair. It aims at integrating and problematising the contents plus various disciplinary perspectives on one subject.
Students who do the Master track Management of Cultural Diversity need to take this course.
