The students will

  • be aware of mixed reality, augmented reality and virtual reality as a (research) field.
  • be able to name, describe, explain, illustrate and reflect upon theories and concepts from the field of mixed reality.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

In this multidisciplinary course, we approach Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) both from a practical and theoretical perspective. On the theoretical side, we gain an overview of what VR and AR entail. We discuss both concepts in the context of Mixed Reality (MR) and subsequently explore various applications of VR and AR. In particular, we focus on the value of AR and VR applications for the humanities and social sciences and investigate the potential VR and AR environments provide for conducting experiments. In addition, we explore the possibilities that VR and AR provide in the context of training and education. Furthermore, we will discuss how we can study the effects of AR and VR and arrive at a better understanding of concepts like embodiment, immersion and presence. This will happen in a weekly two-hour seminar, where students give presentations about assigned topics and research papers and discuss the material. 

On the practical side, the course focuses on concept development and content creation. Students will gain hands-on experience with AR and VR authoring tools, create content and ultimately develop a virtual or augmented reality experience for the final group assignment. They will work with mobile augmented reality technologies, 3d modeling software, the game development platform Unity3D as well as digital audio editing techniques. The obtained skills will then be applied to a group research assignment. To facilitate this, the course entails weekly two-hour practical sessions in addition to the seminars.

Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The course entails eight weekly seminars, in which student give presentations about AR and VR related topics and discuss the material. Furthermore, it entails eight practical sessions, in which students develop their content creation and research skills as well as work on the group project. 

At the beginning of all seminars (aside from the first seminar), students will take a short test. Together, the best six (out of seven) short tests will determine 40% of the final grade. 

Furthermore, student groups will give graded presentations during the seminars. The group presentation will determine 20% of the final grade. 

Connection to the Labor Market

This course connects to the labor market insofar as it provides students with basic skills necessary to create virtual content for AR and VR, and to create AR and VR experience. These skills are, for instance, valuable in the entertainment industry. Furthermore, after successfully completing the course, students will be able to evaluate the potential of AR for various use cases. This, for instance, is a valuable skill when it comes to consulting companies about the use new technologies. 


In addition to the overall grade, the following component grades need to be a pass in order to pass the course:

  • Six short tests (40%)
  • Group presentation (20%)
  • Group assignment (40%)
