Learning goals
After successfully completing this course, students will have met the following learning goals:

  • Be able to conduct research in VR or AR settings

  • Be able to critically asses the potential of VR and AR for different applications and contexts
  • Be able to create a seminar on VR and AR technologies or research

Labour market
This course provides students with basic skills necessary to create virtual content for AR and VR, the knowledge to create engaging and effective AR and VR experiences, and the ability to communicate the requirements of an AR or VR solution effectively to content creators. These skills are valuable in industries that utilize these technologies, such as healthcare, manufacturing and entertainment. Furthermore, after successfully completing the course, students will be able to evaluate the potential of AR and VR for various use cases, and summarize knowledge from the field for others. This, for instance, is a valuable skill for consulting companies about the use of new technologies. Finally, students will cooperate on a complex group project that contains many different elements, such as content creation, theoretical work, conducting experiments and reporting results. This is a likely reflection of working situations they will encounter on the labour market.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

In this multidisciplinary course, we approach Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) both from a practical and theoretical perspective. On the theoretical side, we gain an overview of what VR and AR entail. We discuss both concepts in the context of Mixed Reality (MR) and explore various applications of VR and AR. In particular, we focus on their value for the humanities and social sciences and investigate the potential of VR and AR environments for conducting experiments. We explore the possibilities that VR and AR provide in the context of training and education. Furthermore, we will discuss how we can study the effects of AR and VR and arrive at a better understanding of concepts like embodiment, immersion and presence. This theoretical perspective is organized as a weekly 2h seminar, where students give presentations about assigned topics and research papers and discuss the material.
On the practical side, the course focuses on content creation. Students will gain hands-on experience with AR and VR authoring tools, create content and ultimately develop a virtual or augmented reality experience to be used in a pilot study for the final group assignment. They will work with mobile augmented reality technologies and the game development platform Unity3D. To facilitate this, the course entails weekly 2h practical sessions in addition to the seminars.
Note that this course addresses AR and VR from an academic perspective. Both the research seminars as well as the practical sessions address how to conduct AR and VR research, as well as how to use AR and VR for research into human perception, cognition and behavior. You will have to read a lot of scientific literature, conduct a pilot study and write an academic paper. The course does not focus on app development or game design.

In addition to the overall grade, the following component grades need to be a pass in order to pass the course:
  • Presentation (40% of the final grade)
  • Group project - research pilot & article (40% of the final grade)
  • Short tests (20% of the final grade)
