Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The objects of this course are for students to gain general knowledge as well as understanding about – through the study of the British example -:
  • the rise of the state and its gradual monopolization of the public space in early-modern age;
  • the rise of European empires from the 16th to 18th centuries;
  • the interaction between governmental organization, policy and societal realities;
  • the role of the state in the emergence of colonial empires and of colonial competition in the development of modern statehood.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The course covers two main themes. First, it treats the rise of the sovereign State in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. This is done by looking at the major political, military, religious, economic and sociological determinants and analysing the administrative and legal organisation of the state in its historical context.  Second, the European imperial expansion through the mediation of its state structures is discussed. As European imperialism reached its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this period is included. The process and dynamics of colonisation by different European powers is considered in a comparative way.
