Students are able to describe the characteristics and the steps involved in quantitative research and qualitative research using the correct terminology.

•   Students are able to identify the strength and weaknesses of different methods and choose the best method for a given research question. They can evaluate decisions made in the design of experimental and non-experimental methods.

•  Students are able to define the meaning of a variable, identify its measurement level and its role in a design (e.g. independent, dependent, mediating).

•  Students are able to evaluate research based on its reliability and validity.

•  Students are able to evaluate ethical issues in research.

Research methodology is the toolbox of an academic. Just like a carpenter is expected to know what tools to use when, scientists are expected to know what methods are suitable to address research questions within their field. Knowledge of methodology is essential to both conducting scientific research and evaluating research done by others.

This course is an introduction to the methods of conducting empirical research within the field of Communication and Information Sciences. After a general introduction to the scientific method, important concepts and ethical issues, we discuss experimental research and non-experimental research (e.g. survey research, case studies, analysis of Big Data, computational modeling). We will do so by discussing classic research as well as research that is currently conducted in our own department.

Each meeting consists of three subparts: a knowledge quiz (see 'specifics'), a lecture, and an interactive seminar. During the seminars different methodological issues will be discussed and the knowledge from the literature will be applied to methodological questions in small groups. The students are expected to take an active part in the discussions.

Assessment

Knowledge about the literature is tested in a short quiz at the beginning of each lecture, from the second week onwards. The results from these quizzes together make up 45% of the final grade.

Understanding of the literature and the ability to apply the knowledge to new problems will be tested in a written assignment. This assignment makes up 15% of the final grade.

Understanding of the literature and the ability to apply the knowledge to new problems will also be tested with a written exam with short essay questions which determines 40% of the final grade.

In order to pass the course, your grade for each of these three assessment elements (average of the Knowledge Quizzes, Written Assignment, Exam) has to be a passing grade.

Small changes may be made in the assessment components for students in the 2018 Spring semester. Students will receive detailed information about such changes at the start of the course.
