Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Experiments are widely used in economic research. They can be applied to many areas of economics and business, such as labor economics, public economics, macro-economics, finance, industrial organization, accounting, and management. In this course students learn to conduct economic experiments for their own research, whatever their primary research field. Issues of experimental design, implementation and data analysis are discussed, as well as methodological issues related to specific topics (for example, preference and belief elicitation, experimental games). Furthermore, large-scale experiments are increasingly used in economic research. In the course, students will be taught suitable econometric techniques that are intended to deal with these ‘big data’. The course requires students (1) to propose, design, and prepare their own experiment, and (2) to analyze data gathered in a large-scale experiment. Students who wish to conduct their experiment (for example, for a major or minor field paper or for a master thesis) will be encouraged to do so under supervision of a specialist in their field.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

Introduction into economic experimentation (incentive compatibility; advantages and disadvantages; etc.), translation of research questions into experimental design, preparing an experiment in practice (instructions; protocol; getting familiar with ‘new’ technologies such as facereading and eyetracking etc.), data analysis of small- and large-scale experiments (non-parametric tests, econometrics), and depending on the interests of the students, methodology of preference or belief elicitation, methodology of the study of communication under controlled conditions, methodology of experimental games, methodology of field experimentation..
