Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

The goal of the course is to introduce Research Master students to possible PhD research topics, as well as to research methodology. Thus each student will have to read papers from the scientific literature and present seminars on them.

Inhoud van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)

In the first six or seven weeks different potential PhD supervisors will present seminal papers from their own research fields during three hour lectures. Students will have to complete an assignment on each of these papers. Assignments include writing referee reports on given papers, and/or proving/deriving theoretical results related to presented topics, and/or writing computer programs in MATLAB related to the problems introduced in the class, etc. In the second half of the course, each student will give his/her own seminar on a paper of his/her choice. During the seminar, the student should present the main results/ideas of the paper. During the course will be also given attention to scientific writing and presentation skills.

Bijzonderheden (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)
